MCKAY, FRED J. Fred J. McKay, age 86, of High Springs passed away on July 22, 2010. He was born on March 23, 1924 in Galeton, Colorado. Mr. McKay served in the US Army in World War II in the South Pacific. After getting out of the service in 1946, he worked on ranches and was a rodeo cowboy. He rode both broncos and bulls and rodeoed in all the big venues-Madison Square Garden, San Antonio, Houston, Chicago-but especially enjoyed riding in the Cheyenne Frontier Days and the Greeley Rodeo (where he won the bronco riding three years straight, 1951-53). After moving to Florida, he won the bronco riding at the Kissimmee Rodeo in 1956, then retired from rodeoing. Mr. McKay has lived in the Gainesville area since 1956. He worked at Sperry Rand, then at the University of Florida Beef Research Unit for many years. After retiring, he moved to High Springs. Mr. McKay is survived by daughters, Niccie L. McKay of Gainesville, Patricia Sipe McKay of Brisbane, Australia and Bonnie J. Durden of High Springs; granddaughters, Caroline Westcott Sipe and Catherine Worthington Sipe, both of Brisbane, Australia; sister, Jean Loloff of Greeley, Colorado; his loving companion, Ella Mangravite; and numerous relatives in Colorado and Wyoming. Ride 'em Cowboy! Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 26, 2010 at WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA, 823 N.W. 143rd Street at 10:00am with Dr. Don McGarity officiating. Burial will follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell at 1:30pm. The family will receive friends, Sunday, July 25, 2010 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at the funeral home.
