Elizabeth Downey LEE - Elizabeth "Betsy" Downey, 70 of Lee died Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts. Betsy was born in Boston to the late Elizabeth M. (Vatter) and Edward F. O'Donnell and raised in West Roxbury. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy before attending Stonehill College where she met and married her loving husband of 50 years Richard J. Downey. Although Dick and Betsy moved several times to Bridgeport, Conn., Decatur, Ga, and Medfield, Mass. before finally settling in Lee, Betsy always remained the feisty, outspoken city girl (who, despite her travels never did find her R's). Betsy was a special lady, everyone that met her wanted to get to know her better. She developed long and lasting friendships from high school and college to newer bonds formed working at Vogel's Hallmark. Betsy was someone who listened when you spoke to her. Friends and strangers alike could always count on her empathy, humor, and a refreshing directness whether they wanted it or not. Betsy and Dick loved traveling, especially to Ireland which they visited several times. She loved crossword puzzles, playing online games on her Kindle, and socializing with her vast and diverse group of friends. Her cats and dog meant the world to her but nothing was more important than her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchild. Although she hated what the name might imply, her grandchildren loved spending time with their Ninny. Members of her family include her husband of 50 years, Richard "Dick" Downey of Lee; 4 children, Jacqueline Bullis of New York, R. Michael Downey of Carmel, Calif., Elizabeth "Beth" Morrill and her husband, Robert of Medfield, Mass. and Edward Downey and his wife, Sarah of Lee; 12 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild. Betsy was also strengthened and guided by her strong faith and membership in the Catholic Church. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Parish of the Assumption, St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave., Dover. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to the Dover Children's Home, 207 Locust St., Dover, N.H. 03820 Please go to www.taskerfh.com to sign the online guest book.
