Murphy, N.C. - Dorothy Ann Collins of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at Union General Hospital in Blairsville, Ga.Dorothy was born on Oct. 29, 1930 in Norwich. She was the daughter of Irene (Cruthers) Brown and Paul Beckham Brown.Dorothy served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman and left the service to marry Henry Irving Collins Jr. on Oct. 27, 1953. They lived in Connecticut and together raised a family of four children on a small farm in Lebanon.She was predeceased by her husband Henry; her parents, Paul and Irene Brown; three brothers, Albert Paul, Thomas Harlow and James Edward Brown, and his wife, Virginia Brown; as well as a sister, Mary Lou (Brown) Waterman and her husband, Robert Waterman; and a brother-in-law, Richard Pfannenstiel.Surviving her are her four children, Michael David Collins and wife, Evelyn, of Beirut, Lebanon, Debra Jean Collins of Seattle, Wash., Alora Marie Collins of Murphy, N.C., and Mark Jeffrey Collins; as well as three grandchildren, Henry Irving Collins III and his wife, Bethany, of Centralia, Mo., Christine Lynn Collins of Louisville, Ky., and Andrew Philip Collins of Raleigh, N.C. Dorothy is survived by two sisters, Alys Virginia Pfannenstiel of Gales Ferry and Opal Fredricka Summers along with her husband, Wendell Dean Summers, both of Murphy, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.Dorothy worked for many years as a bookkeeper, retiring in 1992 and moving to Port Charlotte, Fla. She loved crafts of all kinds, painting both oils and acrylics, and she was a master at sewing, knitting and crocheting. Dorothy loved gardening, her family, and always had a hug and understanding for anyone in need. Most of all she loved the Lord and her church.Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 27, 2014, at the Avery-Stoddard Cemetery in Gales Ferry.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Murphy Church of Christ, P.O.Box 511, Murphy, NC 28906.
